Heat Transfer (3 ways)

Convection

Convection is heat transfer that takes place when warm particles move in currents. For example, when a pot of water is boiled, the water particles closest to the bottom of the pot are heated the most. As this part of the water heats, it becomes less dense. This causes the heated water to rise to the top of the pot.

Conduction

Conduction is heat transfer that occurs when particles are in contact with each other
Picture

Radiation

Radiation is the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. Like convection and conduction, radiation can transfer heat through matter. However, radiation is different in that it can also transfer heat through empty space.

**Important Vocabulary**

  • Conduction- the direct transfer of heat between objects that touch.
  • Convection- the transfer of heat as a result of rising warm gas or liquid.
  • Radiation- the transfer of heat through space by waves.
  • heat transfer- heat moving from a warmer object to a colder object.
  • conductor- a material that transfers heat and energy well. (metals, glass)
  • insulator- a material that does not transfer heat or energy. (plastic, wood, cotton)

Heat Transfer

5.P.3.1 Explain the effects of the transfer of heat that occurs between objects at different temperatures
5.P.3.2 Explain how heating and cooling affect some materials and how this relates to their purpose and practical applications
